Retired Special Forces operative John Matrix (Schwarzenegger) is informed by Major General Franklin Kirby (Olson) that all the other members of his unit have been killed by unknown mercenaries. Despite being given protection, the mercenaries, whose ranks include Bennett (Wells), a former member of Matrix's team fired for excessive brutality and presumed killed in the preceding assassinations, attack Matrix's secluded mountain home and kill the guards, kidnapping his daughter Jenny (Milano) in the process. When Matrix gives chase, he is also captured.

Alien life forms have spread throughout the U.S.-Mexico border region leading to the quarantine of half of Mexico. The story follows Andrew, an American photojournalist helping his wealthy employer's daughter, Samantha, get back to America. In Mexico, Andrew buys Samantha a ferry ticket to return to America, but he gets drunk the night before they leave, and wakes up to find the tickets are stolen, so they have to travel by land through the infected zone. Their journey takes them across Central America and eventually back into the United States. When they finally make it back, Andrew and Samantha realize that the city they reach is abandoned. After walking along an evacuation route, the two find an abandoned gas station. Andrew calls the police, who say the army is in the area, and will come to their rescue. After a brief encounter with two aliens, Samantha whispers, with tears in her eyes, "I don't want to go home." The army arrives, and the screen fades to black.

Moving closer Church finds out the farmer dressed VC is actually an American Tunnel Rat. Mentally broken, Church carries the Tunnel Rat closer to the LZ. Along the way Church finds other American Soldiers in need of help. Death follows as Church makes a gallant effort to save lives in dire desperation to reach the LZ. The VC, and one of his own claim anyone that attempts to leave the Jungle. Church reaches the LZ, but it costs him everything, including his promise. Save yourself, or save a life other than your own... full well knowing you won't make it out of the Jungle alive.
